With the next SB coming up, Seahawks and Patriots, I was thinking about what IMHO, was probably the greatest upset and most important SB victory in NFL history. The 1969 SB played in the Orange Bowl, Miami, when the 19.5 point dog Jets beat the Colts 16-7. I was a HS Junior that year and I remember watching that game, I was an AFL fan, the Chargers were my team (Lance Alworth was my all time fav). Ive always favored the underdogs. As the game went on I remember getting more and more amazed that the Jets had a chance and then had the lead going into the 4th quarter. It was jaw dropping! The Packers had easily won the first two SBs, general opinion was that the AFL could not compete with the NFL, and the Colts came into that game with one of the most impressive reg seasons that could be imagined at the time. The Colt defense had tied the NFL record for points allowed per game and the Colts were favored by 19.5 points! thats the largest point spread in SB history. The press laughed at Joe Namath when he said "I guarantee we will win". The Colts were seeing red after that, they wanted to pound Namath, lol. That first AFL win was followed up by the Chiefs beating the Vikings in the 1970 SB, evening the wins btw the two leagues and setting the stage for the merger.



Last pic on the right is of HOFer DE Bubba Smith almost getting to Namath. Smith was on a mission to bury Namath. Smith did get the only sack on Namath in the game. In later years, Smith contended that the game was fixed, and you have to wonder when you look at a couple of key plays, both interceptions (2 of 4 total) thrown by Colt QB Earl Morral. HOFer Unitas had been injured that year, but he got into the game after Morral had thrown 3 picks. The offense picked up but it was too little and too late. Two years later, Unitas started Super Bowl V for the Colts, throwing a 75-yard touchdown before being injured in the second quarter. The Colts eventually won that game 16–13 over the Dallas Cowboys. Anyone remember that one?

@GDB - biggest upset in the SB for me was SB XXII the Broncs vs Redskins - just because of the 10-point comeback and blowout.

Elways Broncos were a 3 point fav, the Skins blew them out, Elway had a bad day. Broncos led in first quarter 10 zip, then the Skins and Williams and Sanders blew their doors off in the 2nd quarter, scoring 34!! As far as comebacks during a Super Bowl, its gotta be Brady's Pats coming back in 2nd half against the Falcons, after trailing 28-3 ! ,that was brutal, how horrible to be a Falcon fan that day. And then Brady and Pats winning it in OT, the first OT game in Super Bowl history. Here's link to the SB 22 highlights ....
