The Arlington Cowboys maintained their unbeaten start to the 2028 regular season with a 19-14 win against the visiting Chargers at AT&T Stadium Monday night. With the victory, head coach Walter Bullock’s team improves to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the division, solidifying their position atop the standings.
The Cowboys took the lead early in the first quarter on a seven-yard touchdown pass from Michael Turner to Nelson Mills, followed by Austin Atkinson’s successful extra point to put Dallas ahead 7-0. The scoring play marked Turner’s only touchdown pass of the game and Mills’s lone receiving touchdown. The Cowboys capitalized on solid field position from punting exchanges and applied pressure, limiting the Chargers’ offensive momentum.
Dallas added to their lead in the second quarter with a 51-yard field goal by Atkinson, who was flawless on his four attempts. The kick extended the Cowboys’ advantage to 10-0 before the Chargers began to respond.
Despite being out-passed in total yardage with Chargers quarterback Gerald Harrell throwing for 288 yards and two touchdowns, Dallas's defense forced three interceptions and recovered two fumbles during the contest. Notably, Cowboys' defensive end Edwin Mathias recorded a sack and a forced fumble, contributing to the team's defensive resilience.
The Chargers mounted a late surge as Harrell connected in the red zone but ultimately failed to convert drives into touchdowns, settling for 14 points on the scoreboard. Their touchdowns were largely off the arm of Harrell with ground support provided by running backs Carol Carrick and David Spencer, each scoring once on the ground.
Dallas's ground game was more modest, amassing 55 yards on 29 carries, with a rushing touchdown by Nelson Mills. The Cowboys' passing effort saw 21 completions on 30 attempts, producing 134 yards reflected in a tight, ball-control game plan.
Special teams play also factored into the game's flow. Both teams engaged in a series of punts resulting in multiple fair catches, exemplifying a defensive battle for territory.
The Cowboys managed to avoid penalties that would significantly hurt their drives, committing four for 26 yards compared to the Chargers' four penalties for 30 yards. Neither team converted a third down on this occasion, highlighting tough defensive stands on both sides.
With the win, Arlington’s Cowboys continue to lead their division and remain unbeaten as they push toward the midseason phase. Head coach Walter Bullock's unit has demonstrated a balanced and disciplined approach, combining opportunistic defense with efficient special teams execution.
Owner IoanBlood commented on the outcome, stating, "Atkinson's perfect night with four field goals really kept us in control. Our defense stepped up when it counted, and that turnover fight was a key to pulling this one out. We’re building the kind of resilience that can carry us far this season."
